چکیده

The Bruggeman formalism is implemented to estimate the refractive index of an isotropic, dielectric, homogenized composite medium (HCM). Invoking the well–known Hashin– Shtrikman bounds, we demonstrate that the group velocity in certain HCMs can exceed the group velocities in their component materials. Such HCMs should therefore be considered as metamaterials. PACS numbers: 41.20.Jb, 42.25.Dd, 83.80.Ab

Coupled-resonator-based metamaterials

In this review, we describe recent developments in functional metamaterials based on coupled resonators. We first consider coupled resonator metamaterials that mimic electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). We present a circuit model for EIT-like metamaterials and introduce a new coupled resonator in which the coupling is provided by a field gradient so that the group velocity can be var...

Implementation of dispersion-free slow acoustic wave propagation and phase engineering with helical-structured metamaterials

The ability to slow down wave propagation in materials has attracted significant research interest. A successful solution will give rise to manageable enhanced wave-matter interaction, freewheeling phase engineering and spatial compression of wave signals. The existing methods are typically associated with constructing dispersive materials or structures with local resonators, thus resulting in ...

بررسی کوپلینگ پیزوالکتریکی و آنیزتروپی بر انتشار امواج صوتی در بلوره صوتی لیتیوم نیوباته

The acoustic wave velocity depends on elasticity and density at most materials, but because of anisotropy and especially piezoelectric coupling effect, the acoustic wave propagation at piezoelectric based crystalloacoustic materials, is an applied and challenging problem. In this paper, using modified Christoffel's equation based on group velocity concept, the effect of anisotropy and piezoelec...

New metamaterials with macroscopic behavior outside that of continuum elastodynamics

Metamaterials are constructed such that, for a narrow range of frequencies, the momentum density depends on the local displacement gradient, and the stress depends on the local velocity. In these models the momentum density generally depends not only on the strain, but also on the local rotation, and the stress is generally not symmetric. A variant is constructed for which, at a fixed frequency...

Frozen light in periodic metamaterials

Wave propagation in spatially periodic media, such as photonic crystals, can be qualitatively different from any uniform substance. The differences are particularly pronounced when the electromagnetic wavelength is comparable to the primitive translation of the periodic structure. In such a case, the periodic medium cannot be assigned any meaningful refractive index. Still, such features as neg...
